COLBERT, Okla. — A 13-year-old boy who was reported missing earlier this week is now in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of his mother, according to authorities.
The case has drawn significant public attention across southern Oklahoma and north Texas after online reports began circulating alleging that the teen had killed his mother before fleeing the area. Some social media comments have further claimed the child had previously experienced abuse and that child protective services had failed to intervene. Law enforcement officials have not confirmed those allegations, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Homicide Investigation Launched
In an official statement released March 1, 2026, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) confirmed it was requested to investigate a homicide in Colbert, Oklahoma.
According to the release, on February 27, 2026, the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office asked OSBI to assist with the investigation after deputies responded to a residence in the 500 block of Sims Road at approximately 6:45 p.m.
When deputies arrived, they discovered a deceased woman inside the home. The victim was identified as 31-year-old Malary Clayton. Authorities stated she suffered injuries consistent with homicide. Specific details regarding the cause of death have not yet been released.
Teen Identified as Person of Interest
During the course of the investigation, OSBI special agents identified a person of interest as 13-year-old Eathan Eaton.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol subsequently issued an emergency alert for the juvenile suspect. As law enforcement monitored incoming information and tracked potential leads, authorities determined the teen had traveled south of the Oklahoma–Texas border.
Multi-Agency Search in Texas
Law enforcement agencies in Texas quickly coordinated efforts to locate the suspect. The Texas Department of Public Safety, Denison Police Department in Denison, and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office launched an immediate search.
On February 28, 2026, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Grayson County deputies located the 13-year-old and took him into custody without incident. Authorities confirmed he is currently being held at a juvenile detention facility in Texas.
Officials stated there are no other suspects at large.
Ongoing Investigation
The OSBI emphasized that the case remains under active investigation. Once completed, agents will submit a comprehensive report to the Bryan County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine what formal charges, if any, will be filed.
Because the suspect is a juvenile, many aspects of the case may remain confidential under state law. Authorities have not released additional details about the events leading up to the homicide or the circumstances surrounding the teen’s disappearance.
Community Reaction and Online Claims
In the days between the teen being reported missing and his arrest, online speculation intensified. Some commenters alleged the boy had been abused and that prior reports to child welfare agencies had not resulted in intervention. At this time, investigators have not confirmed any prior abuse reports or involvement by child protective services.
Officials urge the public to avoid spreading unverified information while the investigation is ongoing.
Law Enforcement Acknowledges Cooperation
In its statement, the OSBI expressed appreciation for the coordinated efforts of all agencies involved in the search and apprehension of the suspect, highlighting the rapid cross-state collaboration that led to his arrest within hours of identifying his location.
As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to release additional information when appropriate. Anyone with further information related to the case is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
