WACO, Texas — The Waco Police Department has arrested two individuals in connection with a fatal shooting that marked the city’s first homicide investigation of 2026.
Reginald Lewis Jr., 20, and Savannah Birdwell, 19, were taken into custody following the death of a 21-year-old male who was shot Thursday afternoon.
According to police, officers were dispatched to the area of 11th Street and Clay Avenue at approximately 12:23 p.m. on February 27, 2026, after receiving reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency personnel transported the man to a local hospital for treatment. Despite life-saving efforts, he was later pronounced deceased. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending further notification procedures, though next of kin has been notified.
Investigators identified Lewis Jr. as a suspect in the case and subsequently charged him with murder. Birdwell was also arrested and charged with failure to report a felony and tampering with evidence. Police have not yet disclosed the specific circumstances surrounding Birdwell’s alleged involvement.
The fatal shooting is being investigated as the first homicide in Waco for 2026. Detectives continue to gather evidence and piece together the events leading up to the shooting. Authorities have not released details about a possible motive or whether the victim and suspects were known to one another.
