BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: 3 Dead, 14 Injured After Mass Shooting on 6th Street at Buford’s Bar; Suspect Fatally Shot by Officers

AUSTIN, Texas — A deadly mass shooting early Sunday morning in downtown Austin has left three people dead and 14 others wounded during a night out on the city’s bustling 6th Street entertainment corridor, authorities said.

The incident unfolded just before 2:00 a.m. local time near Buford’s Bar on West 6th Street, a popular venue known for its lively crowds and nightlife. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said officers responded within 57 seconds after receiving a 911 call at approximately 1:59 a.m., reporting an active shooting in the area.

Upon arrival, police encountered a male suspect armed with a firearm. Three officers “returned fire,” killing the suspect at the scene, Davis said during an early morning press briefing.

Casualties and Emergency Response

Emergency crews quickly began treating victims on site. According to Austin‑Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz, three people were pronounced dead at the scene — including the suspect — and 14 others were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Of those hospitalized, three are in critical condition.

Officials have not yet released the identities of the deceased victims or detailed information about the injured. A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed, and the investigation remains active.

Scene, Investigation, and Public Safety

West 6th Street is one of Austin’s busiest nightlife districts, lined with bars, clubs, and restaurants that draw large crowds, especially on weekend nights. At the time of the shooting, patrons were reportedly enjoying the late‑night atmosphere — with some social media posts showing a packed dance floor just moments before gunfire erupted.

Mayor Kirk Watson and police officials praised the rapid response by first responders, saying that the swift arrival of officers and paramedics likely prevented even greater loss of life. Federal partners are assisting local authorities as they continue processing the scene, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses.

Authorities have urged members of the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues, and to contact the Austin Police Department’s Victim Services Unit if they are seeking information about loved ones who may have been at the scene.

A City in Shock

The shooting has deeply shaken Austin residents and visitors alike, coming as the city prepares for a busy spring season of events and tourism. As details continue to emerge, local officials said they would provide additional updates throughout the day.
