In Loving Memory of James Brown & Dwayne Campbell
We reflect with heavy hearts on the tragic loss of two Maine Department of Transportation workers whose lives were cut short during a fatal crash on I-95 in Waterville on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. Around 9:37 AM, Maine State Police responded to the scene near mile marker 127 after a collision that sent shockwaves through the community and through the tight-knit MaineDOT workforce.
At the time of the crash, crews were conducting bridge construction work, and the traveling lane had been properly closed with cones and a posted stop sign at the southbound on-ramp from Kennedy Memorial Drive. Investigators report that a gray Kia minivan failed to stop at the sign and attempted to merge into traffic, where it was struck by a tractor-trailer. The force of the impact pushed the minivan into the work zone, striking three MaineDOT employees. Two of the workers — 60-year-old James Brown and 51-year-old Dwayne Campbell, both of Waterville — were thrown over the bridge and onto Kennedy Memorial Drive below. They were pronounced deceased at the scene.
James and Dwayne were more than roadway workers; they were husbands, fathers, friends, and public servants who quietly helped keep Maine’s highways safe and functional for all who traveled them. Their sudden passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers faced by transportation crews each day. Our deepest condolences go out to their families, coworkers, and loved ones. May they rest in peace.
