Austin Police Identify Three Victims in Deadly Downtown Shooting

AUSTIN, Texas — Authorities have identified the three victims killed in Sunday morning’s mass shooting outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street, an attack that has left the city mourning and searching for answers.

The shooting, which unfolded in the heart of Austin’s busy entertainment district, left three civilians dead and more than a dozen others injured before the gunman was fatally shot by police.

The victims have been identified as 21-year-old Savitha Shan, 19-year-old Ryder Harrington, and 30-year-old Jorge Pederson.

According to the Austin Police Department, the suspect — identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne — opened fire from inside his vehicle before exiting and continuing to shoot into a crowd gathered along West Sixth Street. The area, located near the University of Texas at Austin campus, was filled with patrons enjoying the nightlife when the gunfire erupted shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday.

Chaos in the Entertainment District

Police say the suspect drove into the bustling district and began shooting from his vehicle before stepping out and firing multiple rounds into the crowd. Witnesses described a scene of immediate panic, with people running for cover and others attempting to assist the wounded.

Officers who were already assigned to patrol the area responded within moments. Authorities said officers confronted Diagne and fatally shot him, bringing the immediate threat to an end.

At least 17 people were struck or injured during the attack, including the three victims who later died. Fourteen others were transported to area hospitals, with several reported in critical condition. Officials have not released the names of the surviving injured.

Remembering the Victims

The three victims represented different chapters of life, each with a future ahead of them.

Savitha Shan, 21, was a student whose life was just beginning to unfold. Ryder Harrington, 19, was a Texas Tech student remembered by friends for his vibrant spirit and strong bonds with those around him. Jorge Pederson, 30, had initially survived the shooting and was hospitalized in critical condition before later being taken off life support, according to updates shared by those close to him.

Family members and friends have begun sharing tributes, remembering their loved ones not for the violence that took them, but for the light they brought into the world.

Investigation Ongoing

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting Austin police in the ongoing investigation. Authorities are working to determine the suspect’s motive and whether the shooting may be classified as an act of terrorism. Officials have emphasized that the investigation remains active and that additional details will be released as they become available.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the swift actions of responding officers likely prevented further casualties. City leaders have pledged support for victims’ families and vowed a thorough review of the events leading up to the attack.

A City in Mourning

The violence has shaken the Austin community, particularly the vibrant West Sixth Street district known for its nightlife and proximity to the university campus. Residents and business owners alike have expressed grief and concern, as well as gratitude for the rapid response of first responders.

As memorials begin to appear near the site of the shooting, the focus for many has shifted to honoring the lives lost — Savitha Shan, Ryder Harrington, and Jorge Pederson — and supporting the injured who continue to recover.

In the wake of tragedy, Austin stands united in grief, remembrance, and resilience.
