AUSTIN, TEXAS — Authorities are continuing to investigate whether a deadly mass shooting that left three people dead and more than a dozen others injured at a crowded bar in Austin, Texas may be connected to a possible act of terrorism, as new reports identify the suspect as Ndiaga Diagne, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
The shooting unfolded early Sunday morning at a popular beer garden in Austin’s busy entertainment district, an area frequently packed with weekend crowds. The establishment is located near the University of Texas at Austin campus, drawing a mix of students, residents, and visitors.
Police said they responded shortly after 2 a.m. to reports of an armed individual opening fire on patrons inside the venue. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as gunshots rang out, sending people scrambling for cover and fleeing into nearby streets.
According to the Austin Police Department, officers arriving at the scene confronted the alleged gunman within minutes. Authorities said officers discharged their weapons during the encounter, fatally striking the suspect at the scene.
In addition to the suspect, two victims were pronounced dead. At least 14 others were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to critical. Officials indicated that several of the wounded remained in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon.
Federal law enforcement sources told national media outlets that investigators are reviewing whether extremist ideology may have played a role in the attack. Authorities cautioned, however, that no final determination has been made regarding whether the shooting will be officially classified as an act of terrorism.
Multiple agencies are now involved in the investigation, including federal authorities assisting local police in examining evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing surveillance footage. Officials said they are analyzing the suspect’s background, communications, and possible affiliations as part of a comprehensive effort to determine motive.
Media reports have identified the suspect as Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen who had been living in Central Texas. Authorities have not publicly released detailed information about his personal history, and officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
City leaders and law enforcement officials praised first responders for their swift actions. Authorities said the rapid response by patrol officers and emergency medical personnel likely prevented additional casualties in what could have been an even more devastating incident.
“This is a tragic and deeply disturbing event for our community,” a spokesperson for local authorities said during a press briefing. “Our focus remains on supporting the victims and their families and ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation.”
The entertainment district remained partially cordoned off throughout Sunday as crime scene technicians continued processing evidence. Increased police presence was visible in the surrounding area as a precaution.
