In Loving Memory of Randy McMillin
The Clayton County community is mourning the tragic loss of 63-year-old Randy McMillin of rural Elkader, who passed away in a devastating traffic collision in October 2024. Randy’s sudden death has left family, friends, and neighbors grappling with grief, as a life marked by connection, kindness, and years of memories was taken far too soon.
The fatal crash occurred on Grandview Road near Elkader when Randy was operating a UTV, attempting to turn into a private driveway, and was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Susan J. Steve. The collision also left Randy’s passenger, Mary Ann McMillin, with serious injuries. Following a trial, a Clayton County jury found Ms. Steve guilty of Homicide by Vehicle While Intoxicated, Serious Injury by Vehicle, and Possession of Marijuana. The jury’s decision, reached after approximately two hours of deliberation, is a step toward accountability for the tragedy that ended Randy’s life.
Randy is remembered not for the circumstances of his passing, but for the life he lived and the impact he had on those around him. He was a dedicated family member, a friend to many, and a valued member of his rural community. His presence brought warmth, laughter, and a sense of steadfastness to those who knew him. While the pain of his loss remains profound, his memory endures in the hearts of loved ones who continue to honor him through their stories, reflections, and acts of remembrance.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with the Iowa State Patrol, continues to highlight the importance of roadway safety, ensuring that Randy’s story serves as both a memorial and a reminder.
May Randy McMillin rest in eternal peace, and may those who loved him find comfort in his memory and the lasting imprint he left on their lives.
