Metcalfe County Tragedy: Husband and Wife Dead in Apparent Shooting
The Metcalfe County community is grieving following a tragic incident that unfolded on Wednesday morning, January 14, when Kentucky State Police were called to a residence on Shady Grove Wickerville Road in Hardyville. According to KSP Post 15, troopers responded at approximately 9:35 a.m. CST after receiving a report of a shooting at the home. Upon arrival, investigators found 83-year-old Doris June Huffman deceased inside the residence from an apparent gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Metcalfe County coroner.
Authorities also discovered her husband, 87-year-old Vander Huffman, inside the home suffering from life-threatening injuries believed to be self-inflicted. He was transported to T.J. Samson Hospital for emergency care, but sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries. The Barren County coroner pronounced him deceased at the hospital. Kentucky State Police confirmed that the case remains under investigation, with Detective Mike Dubree leading the inquiry, and no additional details have been released at this time.
While the circumstances of their passing are deeply tragic, friends, neighbors, and loved ones are choosing to remember Doris and Vander for the lives they lived rather than the heartbreak of their final day. Together, they shared decades of marriage, community ties, and cherished memories that will remain in the hearts of those who knew them. Their loss has left a quiet but profound void in the Hardyville area, and the community extends its deepest condolences to the Huffman family during this difficult time. May they both rest in peace.
