Superintendent D. Mark Byrd, 54, Dedicated Leader of Wilkes County Schools, Passes Away
HAYS — Mr. D. Mark Byrd, age 54, of Hays, passed away Friday, February 20, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of servant leadership, steadfast faith, and an unwavering commitment to the students and educators of Wilkes County Schools.
Born January 21, 1972, in Wilkes County to Dwight and Carolyn Byrd, Mark was a proud son of the community he would one day serve as its educational leader. He attended Lewis Fork Baptist Church and made a profession of faith at Little Mountain Baptist Church, grounding his life in faith, humility, and service.
A Lifelong Commitment to Education
Superintendent Byrd began his tenth year as leader of Wilkes County Schools in the 2025–2026 school year. His journey in education reflected both dedication and a deep love for his hometown roots.
A graduate of North Wilkes High School and Wilkes Community College, Mark earned his Bachelor of Science in History and Secondary Education from Appalachian State University in 1994. He began his career teaching ELPS (Civics) and World History at North Wilkes High School from 1995 to 2002. During that time, he also served as assistant football coach and men’s track coach, mentoring students both in the classroom and on the field.
After earning his Master’s in School Administration from Gardner-Webb University in 2002, he served as Assistant Principal at West Alexander Middle School and Elkin High School. He later became Principal at North Iredell High School and Elkin High School, where his leadership earned him the distinction of Elkin City Schools Principal of the Year in 2011.
In 2012, Mark returned home to Wilkes County Schools as Director of Secondary Education and was named Assistant Superintendent in 2014. He further strengthened his expertise by earning his Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Educational Administration from Appalachian State University in May 2015.
Mark was appointed Interim Superintendent effective January 1, 2016. On January 29, 2016, the Wilkes County Board of Education announced he would become Superintendent effective July 1, 2016. As the eighth superintendent to serve Wilkes County Schools since 1899, he carried that responsibility with pride and vision.
Leadership Beyond the Classroom
Mark’s leadership extended far beyond the school system. He served on the advisory board for Wake Forest Baptist Health/Wilkes Medical Center and as Vice President of Education for the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Executive Board of the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association and the Board of Directors for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
In 2023, Mark was honored as the Bob McRae Superintendent of the Year by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. He was also named the Northwest Regional Educational Service Alliance (NWRESA) Region 7 Superintendent of the Year for 2021–2022 and was recognized as the North Carolina Public School Maintenance Association Superintendent of the Year for 2021.
A Man of Character and Community
Colleagues describe Mark as a true leader who led by example — kind, steady, and deeply dedicated to both the school system and the broader community. He never forgot his roots or lost sight of why he entered education: to serve students.
He was widely respected by his peers both locally and statewide and was a constant source of inspiration and guidance. His mentorship extended beyond the workplace. He was devoted to his family, always setting a positive example for his nieces and nephews. To them, he was not only an uncle, but a role model. To his sisters, he was not only a brother, but a best friend.
Away from his professional responsibilities, Mark enjoyed golfing, trout fishing, and hunting. He was also a lifelong and devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys, proudly cheering for his team each season.

He was preceded in death by a nephew, Tyler Berrong.
